Burn books to destroy a culture Quote published on July 29, 2010 | 2 Responses You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.

The sad thing is that due to the continuing economic turmoil, that’s kind of what’s happening. In my state, they’re closing libraries left and right. Same in California.

But TV is free.
FoxNews is all about closing the libraries, though: http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/special_report/library-taxes-closed-20100628
Eleanor Crumblehulme has a great quote along similar lines: “Cuts to libraries during a recession are like cuts to hospitals during a plague.”
I was going to comment about the Fox News story, but it looks like Mary A. Dempsey had a well-written response.
