I graduated last week — Thursday, May 10. It was one of the most boring experiences of my life. I don’t even remember half the ceremony. I may have fell asleep a few times. I happened not to sleep the night before. I was just so wired. But, when that old man (not sure who he was, it may have been multiple men) started talking, I couldn’t keep my eyes open. Needless to say, I got this giant diploma that says something about having a degree from Auburn University.

Other than the really boring speech, I had another problem. Our graduation is not well-organized. The university is supposed to mail every student a card with their name on it that the student presents to a speaker before they get their diploma. The speaker reads the student’s name, the student walks across the stage, shakes hands with some old guy, and takes his or her diploma. Well, I didn’t get my card. No big deal. Our university website told us to let someone know if we didn’t get one on graduation day. I let someone know. They directed me to someone else. Then I was directed to someone else. That person told me to take a seat and someone would come around in 10 or 15 minutes to take care of all students with this problem. No one came.

As I sat through the ceremony, during my waking states, I was near freaking out. What do I do when I get on stage? Do I now whisper my name to the guy? If I do that, would the mic pick up my voice? Oh my God! Oh my God! Since I’m a fairly smart guy, I figured I’d just hand him my student ID, and let the speaker read from that. Problem solved. Though I shouldn’t have had that much anxiety on graduation day.

What I have I been doing for the last week or so? After getting all of my company out of the house last weekend (I had people over from Wednesday through Saturday), I decided I needed a week’s vacation. I must note that a week’s vacation for me, since I don’t have much money, means staying at home and being lazy. This works well for me.

I’ve made it through seasons one and two of Stargate SG-1, a few movies I’ve seen countless times, and now I’ve started watching Battlestar Galactica again. I’ve got to get some new stuff.

I have been educating myself though. Reading books. Keeping my mind sharp. I finished reading The God Delusion, which I wrote a review of. Interesting book. I’ve since read I Robot, Running With Scissors, and Pledged. I read the firt book of The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and four pages of Einstein’s Relativity (too heavy for me to read right now).

I’ve decided to finally get on the Harry Potter bandwagon and read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which is the second book of the series. I figured I might try to catch up before the final book is released. I’ve been on a four-year hiatus since the first book. And to think I run Books In Bed.

What’s on the agenda from here on out? Next week I have to see about getting some kind of employment that doesn’t involve burgers and fries. Review all the books I’ve read. Continue building this website and Books In Bed. Maybe have a little fun. Live life.

I honestly don’t know what’s next, but I’m kind of looking forward to it. I finally feel at peace with the thought of something different, and I think that’s the point I needed to get to. This doesn’t mean I’m not scared to death about what’s coming. I’m just oddly ready because I don’t have to know what to expect, just know to be expecting something.

This week over at Mundane Monday we’re listing our Top 5 TV Shows.

Anyone who knows me, will understand that this is a hard decision because I have 100+ TV series on DVD. However, they also know that there’s a few shows that will always be my favorites. So, here’s my list:

Firefly
Joss Whedon’s short-lived space-western. I can watch those 13 episodes over and over. It’s one series that doesn’t have a single episode I dislike. I always say, “If you haven’t experienced Joss, you haven’t lived.” His cast and crew worked great on this show.

Seinfeld
I grew up on this show. It could easily be at the top of this list. I can almost recite every episode. Now, that’s dedication to a TV series.

Angel
Yes, another Joss Whedon show. This is the best spin-off I’ve seen yet. It tops Buffy because it was more serious. It asked life’s great questions. It helped teach me that everything in life isn’t black and white.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
This is here mostly because it introduced me to Joss Whedon (that’s 3 if you’re counting). It was the first TV show where I felt like the writers and directors built more on character development than plot.

Battlestar Galactica
This is my current favorite. I initially picked it up because I was in a sci-fi mood. I figured it would be some B-rated series, but it turned out to be much more than that. I have a feeling it might be in my top list of shows for some time to come.

It’s very hard to stop typing names of shows right now. I could probably break it down into a top five in drama and sitcom, then further into a few sub-categories of each one. This list could change in a few years’ time. Or, tomorrow. I’m always looking for the show that can top this list.

What are your top 5 shows? Join the Mundane Monday Meme to let us know.

I just got off the phone with a guy from India who works for Amazon’s customer service department. Yes, I asked where he was from. I think it was because I’ve been reading The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century by Thomas L. Friedman. And reading all about the outsourcing of jobs to India led me to ask the customer service guy where he lived.

But, I stray from the subject. Amazon has screwed up my last two orders. Well, the delivery people have. They, for some reason, won’t leave the package at my front door because I’m not home. This has never been a problem before.

The first order, due December 26, was Christmas gifts for Amy, my sister, and Tim, my brother-in-law. It’s now being replaced and reshipped. The next order, which was due today, was the second season of 24, and I need my 24 fix right now. I recently finished the first season, and I’m despearate for another great story.

I got TiVo on Monday. This the best add-on to the television since its invention. I even spent an hour tonight playing Wordsmith, a game on the TiVo. I’m addicted.

And, oh yeah, I’m almost through with my first week of school. I won’t bore anyone or even myself writing about the details. However, I will say that I potentially found a job that I might be interested in after I graduate (this came from my Editing & Design professor). Copy Editor. The pay is a little better than a reporter’s, I don’t have to do all those interviews, and it’s easy to move up fast because there’s not a lot of competition for the job.

I know this sounds like a lot of random things for one post, but I’m trying to cram this week’s happenings in this post and in a few minutes. I had some Internet trouble earlier in the week, and I’ve been adjusting to the major time minimization with school and work. I hope to be back on track from here on in with my blogging.

As mentioned in my post Fall TV On DVD, fall TV is upon us. I’m currently trying to decide what shows I’m going to watch this upcoming season, and I need to make a decision soon. Right now, I have four shows on my list:

Smallville: Thursday, September 28, 7:00 (CW)

Supernatural: Thursday, September 28, 8:00 (CW)

Veronica Mars: Tuesday, October 3, 8:00 (CW)

One Tree Hill: Wednesday, September 27, 8:00 (CW)

(Note: All times are Central)

Obviously, there are no time conflicts since all of the shows are on the same network, The CW. But, I must make a choice. I really don’t need to have fours shows on my must-watch list this year. It’s a little much to handle with work and school. I can probably rule out Supernatural before the others, but I’m at a loss as to which other show I might take off the list. Veronica Mars is a must-watch because it needs the fan support this season. Plus, I felt lost not getting to watch the second half of Smallville last season. I might have to try my best to get in three shows this season—one show per night, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Fall TV is upon us. For those of you like me that means TV on DVD, probably the greatest invention in my lifetime. Forget the future when we’ll all be in flying cars with no need for gas and have robotic maids. TV on DVD is and will forever be [warning: cliché] the best thing since sliced bread.

So far, I’ve managed to pick up seven sets:

Desperate Housewives: Season 2

Lost: Season 2

Nip/Tuck: Season 2 (still catching up)

Supernatural: Season 1

Veronica Mars: Season 2

VIP: Season 1

Weeds: Season 1

I’ve been in TV on DVD watching frenzy. When I’m not at school, at work, doing homework, or here on the Net, I’m busy flying through a season of television. It’s hard to keep up with all the new sets popping up every week. Aside from football, this is why the late summer/early fall is my favorite time of the year.

And I still have a good number of sets left to get as the TV on DVD season continues.

Alias: Season 5 – November 21

Carnivàle: Season 2 – Released

Charmed: Season 6 – October 17

Joan of Arcadia: Season 2 – November 28

Nip/Tuck: Season 3 – Released

O.C., The: Season 3 – October 24

One Tree Hill: Season 3 – September 26

Scrubs: Season 4 – October 10

Smallville: Season 5 – Released

Not only do I have these titles to get, but I still have to catch up on King of the Hill and The Sopranos. I’m definitely looking forward to picking up Season 5 of Smallville this weekend. The only reason I don’t have it yet is because I’m still watching Supernatural.

But, enough about what I’m watching. I’m just excited about the next few months. Now, if only I could have this kind of enthusiasm about school…

I was looking around the Net for some Buffy quotes to add to my facebook profile the other day. I had completely forgot about one the greatest quotes ever from Buffy. This was from Season 5. I forgot which episode.

Glory: Funny. ‘Cause I look around at this world you’re so eager to be a part of… and all I see is six billion lunatics looking for the fastest ride out. Who’s not crazy? Look around. Everyone’s drinking, smoking, shooting up… shooting each other, or just plain screwing their brains out ’cause they don’t want ‘em anymore. *I’m* crazy? Honey, I’m the original one-eyed chicklet in the kingdom of the blind. ‘Cause at least I admit the world makes me nuts.

Even though Glory was one crazy…This was a powerful quote. “I’m the original one-eyed chicklet in the kingdom of the blind.” Powerful. Joss Whedon and his team of writers are…I don’t even have the words. No one word, no one sentence, no one paragraph, can sum up how wonderful, not only the writers, but also the cast, they were. What they done for television. I could sit here at my desk and analyze every quote I copied into a text file, but that would take a while. Plus, I would just say the same thing over and over and over.

Okay, that’s what I got for tonight. I don’t want to bore anyone with my the mundane details of my life, so I’ll just leave you with that powerful (I need a new word for powerful, I know, but that’s what I feel when I read over it) quote from the series. If you do anything after reading this post, read that quote again and give yourself a few minutes to think it over.

I have yet another television series on DVD to add to my collection, Desperate Housewives. That’s one more for the DVD Collection. I know, I shouldn’t have spent the money. But it was just sitting there on the shelf at Wal-Mart, and I just had to buy it. That’s $50 I could’ve saved for something else. But what’s the use of saving money? I won’t need it when I’m dead. And plus, I got Desperate Housewives from my hard earned money, and plenty of episodes to see Eva Longoria in. Speaking of which, I think I may make an Eva Longoria skin/theme/design (whatever you want to call it).

Anyways, it’s well past my bedtime, so I’m off to sleep for the next 14 hours or so.

I think my head has been in another place, away from the rest of me, these last few days. I get so emotionally wrapped up when I watch a new series on DVD. Mostly, the characters and plots just make me wonder what my life would’ve been like if I had been stuck in their world and situations. I’m actually considering starting to play basketball now. Probably not on a recreational team or anything, just something to do to help me get back in shape. One Tree Hill has done that to me. It’s probably a good thing though. I need something for exercise these days. I’m almost through with the 3rd disc for the second time already. I’ve only had the set since Sunday.

I think a lot of my interests are spawned by my interest in television, film, and writing. I get caught up in the lives of these other people, and I want their drama, their life, their depression, their love. I want it all. Maybe I sometimes get lost because it’s something different, and we all hope for something better than what we have. I know I do. Although, sometimes I have to sit back and reflect on the high points involved with my life. And there has been some really high points in there that occasionally seem unreachable again. But, I know I’ve lived a fairly good life, and that there are still many, many more good things to come. I know this because nothing’s unobtainable.

It’s time for bed. Yep. That’s basically all I need to say and hop on under the sheets, or crawl under the comforter, seeing as how that’s the only thing on my bed at the moment. Ol’ big cousin Shannon let me borrow his One Tree Hill first season on DVD Sunday. I watched the whole entire season straight through, from 9:30 that night until around 3:00 Monday afternoon. So, I’m still trying to regain all of the sleep I missed out on Sunday night. I’ve got to say I fell in love with the series instantly. I’ve already started watching it again. I’m fairly sure that I’ll buy the first season on DVD for myself. The second season of One Tree Hill will be coming out on September 13, 2005. So, I can’t wait to do my catching up with this great series. I also bought NFL Street 2 for my Gamecube. I’ve been playing that a good bit since yesterday.

Sometimes, though, it just seems like playing video games is pointless. I’m really not accomplishing anything more than improving my hand-eye coordination. But then, I get to thinking about how 99% of the things I do in day-to-day life is pretty pointless too. Then comes the depression, and the thoughts of wrist-slashing and pill-drowning…Just kidding! I don’t really get depressed and I’m definitely not a suicidal maniac. Just trying to liven up the blog. Nevertheless, life does have this whole twisted-I-wish-I-knew-what-it-was-all-about kind of vibe. Although it does have its little unpredictable quirks that come around every so often. Like, just recently, I met this girl. And not just some girl, though at first glance she would be just your plain ol’ Alabama girl. But, when I first saw her I knew that there was something more. Something that I wanted to know. Something I had to know. I wanted to feel what life is. Just seeing her made me feel an ounce of what I used to think life was again. And that’s a feeling I would to take with me everywhere. Now, I’m not talking about substantial ecstasy or anything like that. I’m just talking about that absence of not wanting to get out of bed in the morning. Or that spark that forces someone to actually cook breakfast before work instead of eating 2-day old leftovers. That feeling of being content, at least for a moment, with not knowing the answers to what life is. Maybe in a way that is bliss, knowing enough to not want to question the world.

But, not me. If that’s bliss, then I’ll never know that sweet feeling. I question. I seek. I think.

That’s the problem with people who aren’t content with themselves or life, they think. And I’m a thinker.

I’m drowning, and it’s not material or physical. It’s phsycological and it’s emotional and it makes me think that I’m losing my sanity every second. But then again, some of the greatest men to walk this earth were once called insane.
